Default IcyHot a wonder of its own!

So its like this i have had muscle aches and decided to try icyhot creme to relieve the pain. It feels so odd, burns yets cools! amazing stuff!

anywho...

How is it you can put it on your skin and you get the sensation of the creme at work on your aches, yet when you rub it in with your hands they do not feel icy nor hot ????

I mean, that must have been some great engineering where the hands you use to apply with are not affected.

Maybe it only works on the affected area of the body (the part that aches). Try putting a little on your arm (any part that doesn't ache) and see if you still feel the sensation...

If you still feel it (on your arm), maybe your hands are screwed up

Maybe it reacts with the melanin in your skin.

And since your palms don't have a lot of melanin (notice how your palms don't tan?) you wouldn't feel much of anything.

Try rubbing it on the back of your hands, see if that works.

In fact, it smells a great deal like peppermint toothpaste, especially to a nearsighted person operating on three hours' sleep while sharing a hotel room with friends on vacation.

It does not, however, taste like toothpaste in the least.

My bad. That was actually Ben-Gay.

The reason the palms of your hands don't really feel it is first because the skin is thicker and secondly there are a lot less never endings in the palms of your hands and feet because they are used for so much that if you had the same amount of nerve receptors as say the skin on your upper arm could you image opening a beer bottle

try opening a beer bottle with your elbow joint instead of you hands and you will see

ANother unrelated to icy hot trivial knowledge piece the palms of you feet and hands are the only hairless parts of the body

Damn it. I liked my melanin answer better.

And those aren't the only hairless parts of *my* body...

I must have alot of nerve endings in the palms of my hands, because I can feel Icy Hot, and it hurts to open a beer bottle. the skin isn't thin either, I work with my hands alot.

If you work with your hands, it would build callouses. The palm of the hand is the thickest area of skin on the body. It's one of the reasons if you pick up a jellyfish in your palm, only the very edges sting, where it touches areas other than the palm.
